Tear stains are reddish-brown marks under pets’ eyes, mainly caused by the oxidation of porphyrin in tears, infections, physical factors, diet or environmental irritants.
Flat-faced breeds are more prone to tear stains due to their curved nasolacrimal ducts, while high-salt food, allergens, ear infections and dust can also trigger this issue.
Simple daily care can help alleviate tear stains: clean the eyes with pet-specific wipes, trim the hair around the eyes, choose low-salt and additive-free food, and keep the living environment ventilated and clean.
Please note that some pets have a genetic tendency to tear stains and require long-term care; avoid using products containing strong bleaching ingredients. If tear stains are accompanied by eye redness, abnormal discharge or frequent eye scratching by pets, please seek veterinary help in a timely manner.
